Sloped yards can be a real problem. Soil shifts, erosion sets in, and what used to be usable outdoor space just becomes a headache. That's exactly what we were dealing with on this property - a yard that needed serious structural support before anything else could happen.
We installed 3 separate retaining walls to step down the grade and hold everything in place. What makes this one stand out to us is the fact that we did it the hard way. No heavy equipment on site - just our crew, hand tools, and a whole lot of manual work. Block by block, course by course. You can see the drainage pipe and gravel base being laid in before the walls even started going up. That's not a shortcut step - that's what keeps a wall standing for decades instead of failing in a few years.
The walls themselves are built using interlocking segmental block, which gives you that clean, uniform look while still doing serious structural work. Each tier breaks up the slope and creates usable flat ground between levels. It's a big difference from what the yard was before. And the built-in drainage behind the walls is critical - without it, hydrostatic pressure builds up and eventually pushes even well-built walls out of position.
Today we have the heavy equipment to tackle jobs like this faster and more efficiently. But this project is a good reminder that the fundamentals don't change regardless of your tools. Proper base prep, correct batter angle on the block, drainage behind every wall - that's what makes hardscaping that actually lasts. We're proud of how this one turned out, even doing it the long way.
If you've got a slope that's giving you trouble - whether it's erosion, unusable ground, or just land that needs to be shaped and supported - retaining walls are often the right answer. It's one of those hardscaping projects that solves a real problem and adds lasting value to your property at the same time.
